Guns N Roses - Sweet Child O’ Mine (1989)

Album: Appetite For Destruction (Rel. July 21st 1987, Geffen Records)

The lyrics came from a poem Axl Rose was working on. He wrote the song about his girlfriend, Erin Everly, who is the daughter of Don Everly of the Everly Brothers. They married in 1990 but divorced a month later. - Songfact

Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime (1981)

Album: Remain In Light (Rel. October 8th 1980, Sire Records)

”And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
wife
And you may ask yourself-Well…How did I get here?”

Some critics have suggested that “Once In A Lifetime” is a kind of prescient jab at the excesses of the 1980s. David Byrne says they’re wrong; that the lyric is pretty much about what it says it’s about. In an interview with NPR, Byrne said: “We’re largely unconscious. You know, we operate half awake or on autopilot and end up, whatever, with a house and family and job and everything else, and we haven’t really stopped to ask ourselves, ‘How did I get here?’ - Songfact

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (1975)

Album: A Night At The Opera (Rel. November 21st 1975, Hollywood Records)

”Anyway the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me”

The video was very innovative. It was the first where the visual images took precedence over the song. It was based on their album cover, with the 4 band members looking up into the shadows. It was shot in 3 hours for $3,500. Effects were achieved by using camera feedback and prism lenses. At the time, it looked high-tech. It was also the first music video in the sense that it was shot on video instead of film. - Songfact

Journey - Faithfully (1983)

Album: Frontiers (Rel. February 22nd 1983, Columbia Records)

Wondering where I am lost without you
And being a part ain’t easy on this love affair
Two strangers learn to fall in love again
I get the joy of rediscovering you
Oh girl
you stand by me
I’m forever yours
faithfully

Journey keyboard player Jonathan Cain wrote this song about the rough relationship being a married man on the road in a Rock band. Sadly, Cain and his wife divorced a few years later, despite him pledging in the song to be “forever yours… faithfully.” - Songfact
